What Do People Listen To On Their Smartphones?

Smartphone listening imageEdison Research recently completed a study on smartphone usage and discovered that the listening habits of users isn't quite what we believed it to be. in fact, the results were pretty surprising.
  • 54% listened to a radio channel
  • 16% listened to music they own
  • 15% listened to Pandora or other radio-like streaming services
  • 7% listen to Sirius XM
  • 5% to TV music channels
  • 2% listen to podcasting
Heavy listeners (those defined by listening to 2 hours or more per day) have a slightly different consumption pattern.
  • 43% listen to music they've downloaded and own
  • 37% listen to streaming audio
  • 9% listen to AM/FM radio
  • 7% listen to podcasts
Finally, 87% of adults from 18 to 34 never let their smartphones leave their sides.

All that said, we're under the impression that the listening world belongs to exclusively to streaming, but that's far from the case, according to the study. While radio listening and downloads may be dropping, they're still a vital portion of our listening day.

Smartphones And Concerts Are Tied At The Hip

Smartphones at concert image
If you’re like me you’re probably wondering why everyone is looking down at their phones during a concert instead of at the action on stage, but it’s something that’s becoming more the norm and will probably be increasing in the future. And that, it turns out, is going to be a good thing for artists, bands and brands everywhere.

According to an article in Billboard by Donnie Dinch, Ticketfly (the online ticket source where Donnie is General Manager of Consumer) tasked Harris Interactive to conduct a poll asking how people used their phones during a concert or event. What they discovered is beyond interesting.

First of all, 31% of Millennials (18 to 34 year olds) use their phones for half the concert or longer, while only 15% say they never touch it while there. That’s a lot of time to be looking at a small display while the main event is happening in real life, so what are they doing exactly?

It turns out that most of those phones are being used for recording the show, but not so much as a historical document as stoking the FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) fires of their friends. This applies to 40% of the females (as compared to 24% of males), who also share their posts on social media 59% of the time.

All interesting, and maybe a little sad, but the fact of the matter is that there’s a large number of attendees glued to their phone, yet hardly anyone is actively taken advantage of it.

This could come soon thanks to the new Bluetooth beacon technology that companies like Apple and Marriott are employing which automatically send push notifications to smartphones in the vicinity, providing the users with product information, flash sales or deals. With a few well-placed beacons around a venue, there could be an opportunity to sell some merch in a fast and easy way. Read more on Forbes.

Mobile Music Booms

Here's an interesting infographic about the state of mobile music today.

As you can see, 31% of all smartphone users stream music, and 79% of them are listening to Pandora!

The other interesting thing is that the US is only #5 in smartphone users listening to music, behind China, Russia, South Korea and Brazil. We use our phones for a lot more than communicating these days.

Online Radio Listening Increases

Radio Listener Graph on Music 3.0 blogA recent survey done by Arbitron and Edison Research produced some very interesting results that have a number of ramifications for artists and bands. First, some pertinent points:
  • Monthly online radio now reaches 39% of the American population, or about 103 million people. This is up 5% from last year.
  • Listeners spend about 10 hours per week listening to online radio.
  • The vast majority of online radio listeners (87%) also listen to over the air terrestrial radio.
  • 22% of online radio listeners listened to Pandora, up from 16% last year.
  • 17% have listened to online radio from their cell phone.
  • When it comes to work, 68% still listen on a regular radio
  • 45% of the population has watched videos on YouTube (only 45%?). This is up from 41% last year.
  • People spend about 4 and a half minutes watching video per week (half of what they spend listening to radio).
  • 88% of Americans own a cell phone. Half of them own a smartphone.
  • Nearly 2/3rds of 18-34's own a smartphone.
  • 60% own a portable digital media device, meaning an iPod, iPhone, iPad, MP3 player, tablet or Android smartphone. Two-thirds of them own an Apple device.
What all this means is that the line is beginning to blur between media distribution and devices. Soon people will look at "radio" to mean all types of radio, not just online, especially as more and more people become smartphone users. This will happen with all forms of media as well. People will just expect everything to work on every device from every source and won't distinguish between online or terrestrial. It make take a little time, but that time is coming.

What that means for musicians is that you have to be extra vigilant with your mobile strategy, since if it's not critical to your marketing at the moment, that time is just around the corner.

4 Astounding Mobile Stats

iPhone in hand image from Bobby Owsinski's Music 3.0 blog
Cells phones are now a way of life nearly everywhere on the planet, and mobile communications has totally changed the world as we know it. As smartphones become more and more of a factor in our media consumption, here are some astounding facts about mobile from MobileRoadie CEO Michael Schneider
  • On average, we check our phones 150 times a day.
  • Four people are born a second; 39 mobile phones are sold a second.
  • There are presently 5.5 billion-plus mobile users -- smartphones users comprise 21% of them.
  • iPhone users spend 90-plus minutes per day on apps.
I must be the exception to the above, as I'm pretty sure I don't check my iPhone more than 100 times a day. I know for a fact that I don't spend much more than an hour on phone apps either (a big tongue in cheek here). All that said, it seems like these numbers will only increase in the future, which is why it's a good idea to never forget mobile when designing your online strategy.
