Top 10 Highest Grossing Concerts Of 2014

The results are in and the highest grossing concerts from this year will astound you. The following chart from Billboard shows that some music acts are making some serious money on the road. Keep in mind that the chart isn't for an entire tour - it's only for 1 show!

The One Direction/5 Seconds Of Summer tour was obviously a blockbuster, capturing 5 slots of the top 10, including the single highest attendance with 236,566 at London's Wembley Stadium, but The Stones were the highest grossers, capturing almost $28 million for a single date at the Tokyo Dome.

All that said, actual total concert attendance was actually down a little over 1% in 2014, but people paid more money than ever, as the concert industry made nearly 20 billion worldwide - a record.

Global Top Sellers Of 2013

The latest IFPI report is out outlining the recording industry's health for 2013. We'll cover the numbers more in depth in a future post, but first let's look at the top global sellers of last year.

One of the things that sticks out is that the sales numbers for these hits are rather anemic when you consider we're talking world-wide. Also, when you consider the amount of hype that artists like Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Daft Punk received, you'd expect the numbers to be much higher.

But that's the music business we live in today, where sales numbers aren't what they once were and probably never will be. That said, I bet if you look at the same artist's YouTube and streaming numbers (which I'll attempt to get), they'd be off the charts.

Toothbrush Technology Extends A Brand

One Direction toothbrush image from Bobby Owsinski's Music 3.0 blog
Talk about extending your brand, boy band One Direction has teamed up with Arm&Hammer to release two new band-branded toothbrushes. What's especially unique is that the brushes utilize something that A&H calls their "Music In Your Mouth" technology that streams sound vibrations from the bristles of the toothbrush through the teeth, allowing kids to hear music while they brush. What then happens is that the music is conducted through the jaw then transmitted into the inner ear so the brusher can hear the music.

The One Direction toothbrush line will feature two products, each with a different song ("What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing"). Each toothbrush will feature 2 minutes of music, which is about the right amount of time to sufficiently clean one's teeth, according to the company. The toothbrush requires a battery to operate and will have a suggested retail price of $9.99.

While this product seems like a bit of a reach, you can't really blame the band's handlers for doing the deal. It's fun new technology that promotes oral hygiene in the band's target audience, and gets the band's brand in front of a very wide audience, since the product will be rolled out nationwide to drug and food retailers. And since the lifespan of a boy band is fairly short, they're trying to cash in while they can. The most interesting thing is that the band already had a toothbrush deal with Colgate, only without the tunes.

Once upon a time (think 40 years ago) a move like this would have been considered crass and commercial, today it's just good business.

Music Sales For 2012 Not Pretty

Soundscan image from Bobby Owsinski's Music 3.0 blog
Soundscan released its mid-year music sales report on Wednesday and for the most part, the state of the industry is not pretty.

Album sales are down 3% from last year, but that's not the worry. The biggest seller is still Adele's 21, an album released at the beginning of last year. New albums from superstars like Justin Bieber, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Nicki Minaj have yet to make much of a sales dent.

150 million albums have been sold so far this year, behind last years 155 million. Adele's 21 has sold 3.69 million this year and more than 9.4 million in the US since it was released in January of 2011. What's a bit depressing is that 21 is the only album that's cracked the million barrier this year. Lionel Ritchie's Tuskegee is close with 912,000, and the latest boy band sensation One Direction and their Up All Night comes in third at 899,000.

But only 11 albums have gone past 500,000 this year so far, despite all the superstar releases. This is also down from last year when 16 went gold by this time.

Singles are a bright spot, however, as they're up over last year by 6%. The top selling track is Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know," with over 5.5 million downloads since the first of the year. fun.'s "We Are Young" is the runner up with 5.09 million sold, with Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" (which is selling for a quarter on Amazon MP3) coming in third with 4 million downloads.

Even those numbers are down a bit though. In 2012, 47 songs have sold at least a million, while in 2011, 52 songs had reached that point by this time of the year.

Is streaming starting to take it's toll?

The Boy Bands Are Back In Town

The Wanted - Music 3.0 BlogIf you haven't noticed, boy bands are back and they're bigger than ever. As if New Kids On The Block and 'N Sync weren't enough, a new crop has descended upon us, much to the delight of teenage girls everywhere.

First came Big Time Rush, who are today's version of The Monkees, since they have their own hit show on Nickelodeon which regularly draws over 3 million viewers. I've even watched it a few times and I have to say that these guys are pretty talented, although as a boy band, you don't have the burden of playing an instrument competently. You do have to sing moderately well, and at least on the surface, Big Time Rush fills the bill (don't know what they really sound like or how much auto tune goes on).

Then you have The Wanted, who currently have a top 5 Billboard hit with "Glad You Came." Like Big Time Rush, the band was created via an open casting call, which on the surface sounds so very television-like and non-musical, until you realize that many so called "legit" bands or the touring band for artists are put together via auditions. That's basically the same thing. The Wanted want everyone to know that they can actually play instruments though, but as any musician with some gigs under his belt knows, it's a long way from playing an instrument to playing in a band to playing professionally.

But the biggest blockbuster is just now upon us. The British quintet One Direction is about to become a big piece of the music scene for the next year or so (for better or worse). They just made a bit of history by being the first UK artists to have their debut album (called Up All Night) enter the Billboard 200 at #1 (take that, Beatles). Already there's a huge groundswell as little girls in all 50 states anticipate their first US tour, which is guaranteed to make the news more than most of care to notice.

One Direction is the brainchild of former American Idol svengali Simon Cowell, who picked each member individually from the auditions for the British version of the X Factor. You may or may not like his shows, but no one ever said that he couldn't spot talent. We'll have to wait and see about this one though.

Even though One Direction is preparing to take the world by storm, they've apparently been laying the groundwork for quite some time via social networking, as did The Wanted. Months before they ever stepped foot on US soil, the boys engaged in a vast YouTube, Twitter and Tumblr campaign that was more about the guys "feelings" (according to The Wanted's manager Scooter Bruan) instead of being strictly promotional about the music.

This helps to confirm a number of things that I've been posting all along. All of these points come from my speaking at colleges and universities, where I poll the youth of today.

1) YouTube is the #1 music discovery tool used by kids today.

2) Twitter is incredibly powerful if you know how to use it.

3) Despite what you might read, kids are adopting Twitter as a primary social source.

4) Tumblr is coming on strong as a primary social network, and may be supplanting Facebook already in some age brackets.

The point is, you may not be interested in the new batch of boy bands in any way, but it's smart to look at how they're promoted, especially online. It's a blueprint that most artists can use.
