Let's look at Twitter first. As the following graphic shows, there are over 100 million tweets a day currently (and growing rapidly), but 92% of all retweets and 97% of all replies happen with the first hour. After that, it's as good as gone.
As the above graphic shows, Facebook posts that are posted at the top of the hour receive the most comments, and posts at the end of the hour get the least. Also, as I've pointed out in a previous post, the best time for to post on Facebook is at 11AM, 3PM, and 8PM for maximum response.
These graphics just go to show that not only is the content crucial to your post being useful, but the timing as well.

This is very important information to understand when you ask yourself: How often should I be posting on Twitter and Facebook and when is too much just too much?
and the best time for to post on Facebook is at 11AM, 3PM, and 8PM for maximum response. Great to know!
Well it seems that since the lifespan is so short over-posting is almost impossible if your content is strong and relevant and engaging. And people will be through it within 60 minutes.
Should I be blogging? or posting photos on Flickr or videos on YouTube the answer is clearly a resounding yes, as that content is more search-able and has a long-term life as opposed to gone in 60 minutes!
